Rule of Thirds - Photography Technique

The idea behind rule of thirds is splitting the photograph into a grid made of nine squares.

Examples made off internet Images

Rule of third: Landscape

I choose this lake landscape as I thought that it applied to the Rule of third rather well. The actual mountain range is shown in the upper sections, while the reflection in the lake is found in the lower sections. The photograph is sectioned off nicely and each square contains something a little different which still flow nicely together.

Rule of Third: Portrait

I chose this photograph because it had a range of objects within the image, yet still managed to keep the  person the focus of the photograph. I feel that the forward person, is well placed as he rests just above a cross and has plenty of breathing room. The person in the background lies on the horizontal line, allowing him to also have breathing room. This also give depth to the photograph.

Rule of Third: Still life

I chose this image because the photographer took the photograph in the the middle of the bulb exploding. I found that this looked good and I took not off how the shards of the bulb scattered, after putting the grid on it, i found the shards had nicely spread out to several of the different sections, which worked well with the idea of the grid. The bulb itself rested nicely on the left line, giving the shards good room to scatter.

Rule of Third: Street scene

I chose this photograph as I thought it would be interesting to put a grid on it, and see how a street scene would section out. What I found interesting, was the cars all seeming to be contained within the inner section. This made the image itself seem interesting as it adds a depth to the images, as all the cards come from a single point. The buildings to the left seem well placed as they flow nicely with the photograph, however with the buildings on the right, it seems the grid has ruined the flow, making it seem more distant.

My own Example

This was a photograph I had taken in a woods nearby. I found that the dumped rubbish really contrasted the green as they stuck out as un-natural.

With the Grid In place I found that the lines rested nicely on the barrel and pallets. This made me think abut how else the grid could have been placed and wether or not it would look better with the barrel resting in the squares to the side rather than on the barrel.
