Early life

In the 1960's Feldmann studied painting at the University of Arts and industrial Design Linz in Austria. He begun his work in 1968, producing a series of small handmade books, which would later become a large part of his life. These books, simply named 'Bilde' or 'Bilder', would include one or more reproductions from a certain type: shoes, chairs, film stars etc. Their subjects were presented individually without captions. In 1979 decided to pull out of the art world and produce books and pictures for himself. His later work wasn't seen, until 1989, when the Curator Kasper Konig convinced Feldmann to exhibit his work in a gallery.

His Work

Feldmann is a figurehead for the conceptual art movement and practitioner in the artist book and multiple formats. His approach towards art is collecting, ordering and representing photographs of his collections. He then procedes to place these photographs within themed booked, postcards, posters or other media forms.

303 Gallery

In 2004 some of his work went onto exhibition in the 303 Gallery, New York. This exhibition mainly featured his work with photography, however in 2005 ShadowPlay was exhibited there, before being moved to the pompidou centre. A lot of the pieces on exhibit there were what he did with the photographs he had taken and made them into multi-media pieces, for example combining physical pieces with photographs etc.

Gallery Work

This was one of the pieces on display at the 303 Gallery. He named this one simply 'Collage' as it seems he doesn't care for the name of the piece, but rather the piece itself. From what I can tell this collage mainly consists of various parts of people, however there are also other items thrown in as well as buildings, making it seem there isn't any real theme to the photographs. What I think is best about the piece is the combination of both coloured and black and white photographs. The contrast between the two create a really nice effect and makes the colours stand out even further.

This Piece was named 'One Pound Strawberry'. This piece is made of roughly 32 different photographs of strawberries, each with a different shape. I find this piece to be interesting because it opens ways to many different interpretations on how it could be seen or what it could represent. For example it could be showing variation and the strawberries are a metaphor for whatever the viewer may feel.

Artist Evaluation

Overall I feel that Feldmann's work really is inspiring. Most of his pieces can be viewed in so many ways. What I really like about his work is the lack on actual recurring themes, the randomness of his work seems interesting and I can see why he was the figure head for the conceptual art movement. I find his ideas of applying a baseless structure to his work, he doesn't use a grid or any linear structure he seems to place the parts of a piece randomly however it forms the piece really well. I also find his use of different forms of media to create art really interesting. He works with modern sculpting alongside his photography. A lot of his pieces often have noticeable similarities, for example several of his pieces are made like the 'One Pound Strawberry' where the piece is made of multiple different canvas's, making up a larger piece.
